How driver education works
This overview is designed for Northwest Branch families who are new to Indiana driver education requirements.
Step‑by‑step process
- Register with the Northwest Branch. Start by enrolling through our secure registration portal and selecting the Northwest office.
- Complete the 30‑hour course. Students complete an approved 30‑hour classroom or online course that covers traffic laws, safety, and driving concepts.
- Obtain the CDE form and take the permit test. After enrollment, you will receive the information and documentation needed for the BMV learner's permit test.
- Practice with a licensed adult driver. Students gain supervised practice driving time with a parent or guardian between lessons.
- Schedule 6 hours of in‑car lessons. Work directly with Northwest Branch instructors to schedule three 2‑hour drives, for a total of 6 hours behind the wheel.
- Prepare for the driving skills test. Your instructor will help you identify when you are ready to take the driving skills exam.
- Complete the driving skills test. Many students choose to take the skills test through Elite Driving Academy as part of a package. Check our Pricing page for details.
